One of my favorite games to work on for communication skills is the Melissa & Doug Reusable Sticker Pads. I am obsessed. My son, Will (age 2), enjoys playing with it. My clients love playing with the sticker scenes and often do not want to stop. Heck, I don’t want to stop playing with the stickers. Fun for kids and adults….double bonus!
Each Melissa & Doug sticker pad comes with five large picture scene pages and hundreds of reusable stickers. You can target so many different goals with this product!
It specifically targets the following: spatial directions (ex: over, under, beside, in between), grammar, vocabulary, social skills, and articulation.
To target spatial concepts you could have your child place a sticker according to your direction. “Put the horse in between the barn and the fence” or “Place the rooster on top of the barn.”
To target grammatically correct sentences, you can have your child produce a sentence for each sticker they place on the pad. The child could say, “The elephant is by the tree” or “The dog is drinking water.”
If a child is working on requesting or labeling vocabulary, you could have them ask for each sticker that they need. “Tiger, please.” “I want the rooster.”
For a child working on flexibility and social skills, you can take turns placing the stickers on the pad. When it is the child’s turn, he/she can place the sticker where they want and when it is the adults turn, the adult gets to decide (and the child works on flexibility by allowing the adult to do so).
If your child is working on producing a specific speech sound, think of a word that has the target sound that could be used throughout the activity. For example, if the child is working on producing the /l/ sound, you could have them request the sticker they want in a sentence that contains an /l/ word. “I would LIKE the horse please.” “I would LIKE the snake please.”
These Melissa & Doug sticker pads are affordable and the best part–reusable and simple enough that you can use at home or take with you on a trip.
Target also has a bundle set available of a jungle, under the sea and farm themes.
There are a few more options here, but below are what I bought. And, they are worth every penny.
